The American Proposition is both simple and audacious—A Constitution that secures our unalienable rights to equality and liberty, establishes an effective government, by consent, for a pluralistic Republic, and limits our leaders by defining both the ends and means of government. The American Proposition rests of three premises: 1. All Are Created Equal and Endowed by Their Creator with Certain Unalienable Rights; 2. Because Humans Are Not Angels, It Is Necessary to Establish a Government by the Consent of the Governed; 3. Because Our Leaders Are Not Angels, It Is Necessary to Devise Mechanisms to Control the Government. The American Proposition, including its component premises, has important consequences for all aspects of American life, but particularly higher education. If a university embraces the American Proposition, then the University must promote academic freedom for faculty, students, and staff, ensure individual dignity for all members of the university community, and promote what Inazu calls Confident Pluralism. This paper explains the American Proposition and then explores its implications for a university that chooses to adopt it. The paper also discusses how those who reject the American Proposition create divisions in our national discourse and on our campuses.
