Expectations & Aspirations of 2024 Board of Directors
Thank you for considering your service on the Board of Directors of the Education Law Association (ELA). As a membership organization, ELA relies on the talents and generosity of our members in the association’s governance. Service on the Board of Directors as either a director or an officer is both a privilege and a responsibility. To that end, please note the following expectations and aspirations as you consider serving on the Board.
- Each director will serve a three-year term.
- The Vice President will serve for a total of 4 years as follows: 2024 Vice President, 2025 President-elect, 2026 President, and 2027 Immediate Past President.
- These positions all involve service on the Executive Committee of the Board.
- The Executive Committee meets once per month in preparation for the board meeting.
All Directors and Officers are expected to:
- Attend ELA Board meetings as follows: (a) Virtual monthly meetings to the maximum extent possible, with infrequent exceptions; (b) Two in-person meetings during the annual conference, one held the day prior to the conference and one held immediately following the conference unless otherwise arranged by the Board; and (c) One extended mid-year meeting as determined by the board.
- Serve and actively participate on at least one ELA committee in consultation with the ELA President. Each Board Member will serve as a co-chair of a committee.
- Provide complete contact information to ELA.
- Create or update any biographical information related to work or other organizations to include ELA affiliation.
- Read ELA’s Constitution and Bylaws.
- Read ELA’s weekly and monthly periodicals and any materials distributed related to board meeting agendas.
- Review, complete, and sign a conflict of interest disclosure form and other corporate policies as may be applicable.
- Be an active participant on ELA’s Website, including at least one Section.
- Recruit at least three new ELA members during the Member’s Board term.
- Introduce and/or promote ELA during related activities and conferences.
In addition to the expectations specified above, it is also hoped that each officer and director will consider the following aspirations:
- Contribute to the ELA Annual Development Fund, Legacy Fund, or special fundraising activities as they are able.
- At least once during three-year Board term, contribute to one of ELA’s publications, as an author or editor.
- If teaching education law, consider using one or more ELA publications as course material.
