Call for Pre-Tenured Faculty: Law and Governance in Higher Education Mentoring Roundtables

Applications are now being accepted for Penn State’s Law and Governance in Higher Education Mentoring Roundtables (https://sites.psu.edu/cshe/mentoring-roundtables/), May 15-18, 2023, on the University Park campus. Law, legal issues, finance, accountability, organizational learning, and governance in higher education are the topics of these intensive seminars for a small group of pre-tenured faculty members who write and teach in these areas of study. The Roundtables faculty include Alicia Dowd and LaWanda Ward of Penn State’s Center for the Study of Higher Education (CSHE), Dara Purvis of Penn State Law, and Stella Flores of the University of Texas at Austin.

The Mentoring Roundtables are designed to increase the racial diversity of the professoriate, improve the publication prospects of those who participate, and strengthen individual and collaborative research agendas. Selected participants will present draft manuscripts of academic publications to the group. Each work-in-progress will be read by all participants and receive a focused critique by one of the Roundtables faculty, whose experience includes roles as editors of AERA Open, Journal of Student Affairs Research and Practice, Review of Educational Research, and Yale Law Journal. Additional topics include locating funding opportunities, developing research agendas, reciprocating in the mentoring relationship, and staying true to one’s purpose and principles.

Applications will be reviewed and accepted on a rolling basis, with those submitted by March 15th, 2023 assured full consideration. A completed application will include your c.v., a brief description of your research focus (up to 500 words), and an abstract (up to 100 words) of the manuscript you propose to workshop. Selected participants will be expected to submit a full draft scholarly paper by late April, 2023.  Local expenses for accommodations and meals will be covered at no cost to participants. Participating Scholars’ expenses include their own airfare and ground transportation.

Information, including faculty bios and the application form, can be found at https://sites.psu.edu/cshe/mentoring-roundtables/ .

Note also that Penn State offers one of the nation’s few opportunities to earn a doctoral and law degree during a coordinated course of study. To inquire, email Prof. Maria Lewis, J.D.
