State legislatures and local school authorities have struggled to find effective means to increase school safety, thereby improving the educational environment for teaching and learning. Zero tolerance laws and policies and school policing have been two popular strategies. However, such policies and practices have manifested several unintended consequences, such as disciplinary disparities, increased referrals to the juvenile and criminal justice system, and a spike in violations of students’ civil rights. Even in light of little evidence that these efforts have been effective in increasing school safety, they remain entrenched in school and university policies and practices. This panel will discuss these consequences and review current efforts to stem the negative impacts these strategies have had on students.
