I will present my Equal Justice Works fellowship project, which is hosted by California Tribal Families Coalition and funded by the Danaher Corporation, to demonstrate how engaging tribal systems and Indian law presents unique opportunities to improve education outcomes for Native American students. Specifically, my project is designed to empower tribes and tribal families to provide trauma informed education advocacy for tribal children in California’s child welfare system. It is important to recognize that tribes, as sovereign nations, are in a unique position to support tribal families—a population often left behind by larger systems—to finally overcome the harms caused by public policies like the Indian boarding schools.
