While employment discrimination unfortunately takes place across a variety of issues on college and university campuses, one that is infrequent but possible is age discrimination. This presentation focuses on the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967 (ADEA) and its applicability to institutions of postsecondary education. While mandatory retirement from faculty positions at colleges and universities is no longer a viable issue, it once was and the ADEA had to be carefully considered in the tenure context. In the current schema of professional practice, institutions of higher education must be mindful of the age of applicants for employment or promotion within their current positions.
