Call for Authors: A Guide to Special Education Law, 2nd Edition and Legal Literacy for Public School Teachers, 2nd Edition


The Education Law Association seeks authors who would like to contribute to one or more of the following publications.

A Guide to Special Education Law, 2nd Edition

A Guide to Special Education Law is a newer ELA publication currently in its 1st edition (2017). ELA is preparing to update the materials for a 2nd edition to reflect current legal language and rulings. The anticipated publication date for the 2nd edition is November 2024. Much of the content for this book was recently updated for The Principal’s Legal Handbook. We are soliciting additional chapters to include. The audience for this publication includes school leaders, special education directors, attorneys, professors, and students of special education law.   2. Discrimination Under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act & Americans with Disabilities Act

  4. Related Services Under the IDEA
  5. IEPs, Least Restrictive Environment, and Placement
  6. Secondary School Transition Planning
  7. Disciplining Students with Disabilities
  8. Parental Rights, Procedural Safeguards, and Due Process

  10. Charter Schools and Students with Disabilities

We are particularly interested in authors who can contribute to the existing chapters or author additional chapters on the provision of special education services during COVID-19, homeschooling and students with disabilities, information about attorneys’ experiences and advice representing clients, parents’ experiences and perspectives, especially with a DEI focus, or other chapters addressing subjects or content not currently covered.

Legal Literacy for Public School Teachers is a new ELA publication currently in its 1st edition (2021). ELA is preparing to update the materials for a 2nd edition to reflect current legal language and rulings. The anticipated publication date for the 2nd edition is January 2025. The content for Legal Literacy for Public School Teachers 2nd edition will be drawn from what was written for The Principal’s Legal Handbook 7th edition. We are particularly interested in authors who can contribute to the existing chapters or author additional chapters on the legal rights of teachers, particularly labor and employment, school and personal liability for student injuries, religious freedoms, student discipline, curricular issues, or other chapters addressing subjects or content not currently covered.

I. Requirements

Qualifications for Authors:

  • Educational law content expertise through scholarship and/or practice;
  • Prior experience in scholarly or practitioner publishing;
  • Demonstrated organizational and attention to detail skills; and
  • Proficiency with Bluebook Citation Manual.

Responsibilities of Authors

  • Write your assigned chapter, incorporating current developments in the law and emerging issues;
  • Obtain copyright permission for anything you plan to include in your chapter;
  • Include accurate materials and citations;
  • Support copy editing as needed; and
  • Assist with marketing activities for the book.

II. Proposal/Application Submission

If you are interested in serving as an author for one or more of these books, please submit a proposal. Your proposal will be evaluated by the Publications Committee with the Board of Directors serving as the final decision maker. Proposals are due by January 15, 2024. All proposals should be submitted to the Education Law Association, Att: Publications Committee at support@educationlaw.org

Proposal/Application Components

  1. Letter/statement of interest
  2. Name(s), affiliations, and a short CV of the proposed author
  3. Statement proposal which must include:
    1. Proposed chapter title 
    2. Proposed abstract 
    3. Proposed outline
  4. Writing sample of the applicant

III. Compensation

Authors will serve in a voluntary, non-compensated role. The Education Law Association will hold the copyright for all materials included in the book. However, all authors will receive title page recognition for their contributions.
